University of Toyama is conducting a Summer Mountain Clinic on Mt. Sugoroku, which is located in the center of Japan Alps (ca 2,600m above sea level), as volunteers between July 25 and August 26 in every summer..
This year’s operation is completely different from the previous years. This year, only medical volunteers have joined the clinic, as the COVID-19 crisis from this spring has halted the activities of medical students in the mountain club. Also, in previous years, we have had the help of many medical professionals from within and outside of Toyama prefecture, but this year the number of volunteers is very small due to this COVID-19 crisis. This year, we have prepared a very different system from previous years, including a variety of new protective medical equipment in case we encounter patients suspected of being infected with the new corona virus on the mountain.
In addition to the COVID-19 crisis, the frequent earthquakes around the Japan Alps and the prolonged rainy season this year made the opening of this Mountain Clinic a doubtful proposition, but fortunately Prof. Kuroda was able to be in charge of the first team from July 30 to August 2, 2020.
In every year, this clinic was made possible by the understanding and cooperation of many hospitals, staff members and members of the Gifu Prefectural Police, both in and out of Toyama prefecture. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their continuous support.
