髄膜腫は代表的な脳腫瘍の一つです。脳腫瘍全体の約20%が髄膜腫で、近年の統計ではわが国の脳腫瘍の中で最多のものとなっています。脳腫瘍は脳を覆っている膜から発生する腫瘍で、多くの髄膜腫は良性腫瘍ですが、まれに悪性腫瘍の性格を示すものもあります。
治療の基本は、手術による全摘出です。髄膜腫の発生部位、サイズなどによって、治療の難易度は大きく異なります。当科では、手術困難な髄膜腫の場合には、ナビゲーション、頭蓋底手術のテクニックなど、あらゆる手段を講じて安全な根治手術を目指しています。
手術前に実施する脳血管内手術による腫瘍塞栓術は、手術時間の短縮、出血量の減少の点できわめて有用です。

Meningioma is one of major intracranial tumors. Total removal through craniotomy is the best radical treatment. Meningioma is basically benign, but large and/or deep-seated meningiomas requires skull base technique, intraoperative navigation, and neurophysiological monitoring. Preoperative embolization is quite useful to shorten operation time and reduce blood loss during surgery.
